About Sinusitis

Sinusitis often follows a cold and can cause a blocked nose, nasal discharge and pain or pressure around the face. Most cases improve without antibiotics. Symptoms lasting more than 10 days without improving, or getting worse after initially easing, may need a closer assessment. Fever, discoloured discharge and severe pain on one side can also help inform the decision.

If an antibiotic is appropriate, phenoxymethylpenicillin is usually the first choice. Doxycycline or clarithromycin may be suitable alternatives for some people. The prescriber will decide which treatment, if any, is right for you.

Frequently asked questions about Sinusitis treatments

Antibiotics may be considered if your symptoms last more than 10 days without improving or worsen after initially easing, especially if you also have a fever, discoloured nasal discharge or severe pain on one side of your face. Complete the online consultation and a prescriber will assess whether an antibiotic is suitable for you.

Possibly. Discoloured mucus is one sign the prescriber will consider alongside how long you have been unwell and your other symptoms. Mucus colour alone does not decide whether you need an antibiotic.

You can complete an online consultation for a UK-registered prescriber to review. If an antibiotic is suitable, they may issue a prescription for our pharmacy to dispense.

Yes, if the prescriber decides an antibiotic is appropriate and phenoxymethylpenicillin is suitable for you. It is usually the first-choice antibiotic for acute sinusitis.

Tell the prescriber about your allergy. Doxycycline or clarithromycin may be suitable alternatives, depending on your circumstances and other medicines.

Our usual course is five days. Take the antibiotic exactly as prescribed.

Contact us for a further review. The prescriber will assess your progress and may recommend another five days of treatment if appropriate.

It often improves within a few weeks. If your symptoms are not improving after three weeks of treating them yourself, seek medical advice.

They may contact you for more information or advise you on a more suitable next step. If your order is declined after clinical review, you will receive a full refund.

Seek urgent medical advice if you are very unwell, your symptoms are getting worse, or you have swelling around an eye or changes to your vision.
