About Cold and Flu

Flu, also called influenza, can cause sudden fever, body aches, a cough and exhaustion. Treatment depends on your symptoms and your risk of complications.

Tamiflu contains oseltamivir, an antiviral medicine used to treat influenza or help prevent it after close contact in suitable circumstances. It can shorten flu illness when started early. Rest, fluids and suitable pain relief also help manage symptoms. Antibiotics do not treat the flu virus.

Frequently asked questions about Cold and Flu treatments

Yes. Our service is available to adults aged 18 and over. Complete the online consultation and a UK-registered prescriber will assess whether treatment is suitable. They may contact you if they need further information.

No. Tamiflu treats influenza. It does not treat the common cold or COVID-19. Flu usually starts suddenly with body aches and marked tiredness, while a cold tends to develop gradually and mainly affects your nose and throat.

Tamiflu works best when started within 48 hours of your symptoms beginning.

Yes, when the prescriber considers preventive treatment appropriate. It is usually considered for people at higher risk of complications and should normally start within 48 hours of the last close contact. It does not replace flu vaccination.

People aged 65 or over, those with conditions such as asthma, diabetes or chronic kidney disease, and people with a weakened immune system may be more likely to benefit. Pregnancy and the first two weeks after giving birth also increase the risk of complications.

The prescriber assesses each request individually. An existing medical condition, pregnancy or breastfeeding does not automatically exclude you from treatment.

The usual schedules are:

To treat flu: take your prescribed dose twice daily for five days.

To prevent flu after close contact: take your prescribed dose once daily for ten days.

Your prescription may differ depending on your weight, kidney function or immune system. Follow your prescription label.

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting and headache. Taking Tamiflu with food can help reduce nausea and vomiting.

Read the leaflet supplied with your medicine. Seek urgent medical help for a serious allergic reaction or unusual changes in behaviour.

Delivery may be available as quickly as the next working day after prescription approval, depending on the order cut-off, your location and chosen delivery service. Available delivery options are shown at checkout.

The prescriber may ask for more information or recommend a more suitable next step. If your order is declined after clinical review, you will receive a full refund.

Call 999 or go to A&E for severe difficulty breathing, sudden chest pain or coughing up blood.

Contact your GP or NHS 111 urgently if you feel severely unwell, are short of breath, cannot keep fluids down or are passing very little urine. Seek medical advice if your symptoms have not improved after seven days.
