About Male UTI

A urinary tract infection (UTI) happens when bacteria get into the bladder or urethra (the tube you pee through). Symptoms can include pain or burning when peeing, needing to pee more often or urgently, cloudy or smelly urine, and pain low in your tummy.

UTIs are less common in men than in women, and they are treated with a longer course of antibiotic tablets. Nitrofurantoin or trimethoprim is usually the first choice. A UK-registered prescriber will assess your symptoms and decide which treatment is right for you.

Frequently asked questions about Male UTI treatments

A UTI in men is usually treated with antibiotics. A UK-registered prescriber will assess your symptoms and check whether antibiotic tablets are suitable for you.

Yes. Complete our free online consultation. If treatment is suitable, your prescription can be dispensed by our registered pharmacy and delivered as quickly as the next working day.

Yes. Nitrofurantoin is one of the first-choice antibiotics for UTIs in men. It may not be suitable if you have kidney problems, so the prescriber will check this with you.

Yes. Trimethoprim is also a first-choice option. It may not be suitable if you have taken it in the last three months or take certain other medicines. Tell the prescriber about any medicines you take so they can choose the right treatment for you.

Seven days. Men need a longer course than women to clear the infection. Take the antibiotic as prescribed, even if you start to feel better sooner.

Yes. A urine sample will need to be sent to your GP. This helps confirm the infection and check the antibiotic is the right one. You can start treatment while you wait for the result.

You should usually start to feel better within two days. If you are not improving by then, contact us or seek medical advice. Get help sooner if your symptoms get worse or you feel unwell.

Drink plenty of fluids and take paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain, if they are suitable for you. Continue to take the full course of antibiotics.

Repeat UTIs in men can sometimes be linked to a prostate or kidney problem. If you have had more than one UTI, we recommend you also speak to your GP so they can check for an underlying cause.

They may contact you with further questions and advise you on the next step. If your order is declined after clinical review, you will receive a full refund.

Seek urgent medical advice if you have a high temperature or shivering, pain in your back or side, pain between your scrotum and back passage, blood in your urine, or you cannot pee. Call 999 or go to A&E if you become confused or faint, have fast breathing, or suddenly become very unwell.
