About Cellulitis

Cellulitis is a bacterial skin infection that can develop after a cut, cracked skin or an insect bite. The area may become hot, swollen and painful, and the redness can spread.

Mild cellulitis can often be treated with antibiotic tablets. Flucloxacillin is usually the first choice, while clarithromycin may be suitable if you are allergic to penicillin. A UK-registered prescriber will assess your symptoms and decide which treatment is right for you.

Frequently asked questions about Cellulitis treatments

Cellulitis is treated with antibiotics. A UK-registered prescriber will assess your symptoms and check whether antibiotic tablets are suitable for you.

Yes. Complete our free online consultation. If treatment is suitable, your prescription can be dispensed by our registered pharmacy and delivered as quickly as the next working day.

Yes. Flucloxacillin is usually the first-choice antibiotic for cellulitis. A UK-registered prescriber will check whether it is suitable for you.

Cellulitis affects deeper layers of skin, so antibiotic cream alone is usually not enough. It generally needs antibiotic tablets.

Clarithromycin may be suitable. Tell the prescriber about your allergy and any other medicines you take so they can choose the right treatment for you.

Five days. Take the antibiotic as prescribed, even if your skin starts to improve sooner.

You should usually start to improve within two to three days. If you are not improving by then, contact us or seek medical advice. Get help sooner if the infection spreads quickly or you feel unwell.

Skin can take longer to return to normal, even when the antibiotic has worked. If it is still getting worse or is not improving, contact us for a review. The prescriber can decide whether you need more treatment.

They may contact you with further questions and advise you on the next step. If your order is declined after clinical review, you will receive a full refund.

Seek urgent medical advice if the infection is spreading rapidly, is near your eye or nose, or you have a fever or feel very unwell. Call 999 or go to A&E if you become confused or faint, have fast breathing, or suddenly become very unwell.
