About Infected Insect Bites

An insect bite can become infected if bacteria get into the skin, particularly after scratching. Increasing pain, warmth, spreading redness or pus may be signs of infection.

If antibiotic tablets are appropriate, flucloxacillin is usually the first choice. Clarithromycin may be suitable if you are allergic to penicillin. A UK-registered prescriber will assess your symptoms and decide which treatment is right for you.

Yes. Bacteria can enter through the bite and cause a spreading skin infection called cellulitis. Antibiotic tablets may be needed if this develops.

Five days. Take the antibiotic as prescribed, even if the bite starts to improve sooner.

You should usually start to improve within two to three days. If you are not improving by then, contact us or seek medical advice. Get help sooner if the infection spreads quickly or you feel unwell.

Skin can take longer to return to normal after the infection improves. If pain or swelling is getting worse, or the infection is still spreading, contact us for a review. The prescriber can decide whether you need more treatment.

They may contact you with further questions and advise you on the next step. If your order is declined after clinical review, you will receive a full refund.

Seek urgent medical advice if redness is spreading rapidly, the bite is near your eye, or you have a fever or feel very unwell. Call 999 if your lips, mouth or throat swell, or you have difficulty breathing.
