What is the Wegovy pill used for?
The oral Wegovy pill is a daily prescription tablet used to help adults lose or manage their weight. While the Wegovy pill is used for weight management, some studies have shown it can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing your risk of cardiovascular issues.
You may be able to get a prescription for Wegovy tablets in the UK if you:
- Have obesity, which means your BMI is 30 or higher.
- Are overweight with another health issue, which means your BMI is between 27 and 30, and you also have a health condition linked to your weight, such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease or high cholesterol.
For some people, weight-related health risks can start earlier, such as in people with African or Asian ethnicity. In these cases, your prescriber may initiate treatment if your BMI is 27.5 or higher – or 24.5 or higher if you have a health condition linked to your weight.
How effective is the Wegovy pill for weight loss?
The Wegovy pill can support effective weight loss when used in combination with lifestyle changes, such as a reduced calorie intake and upping your physical activity.
A 2025 study found that adults taking the daily 25mg Wegovy pill alongside diet and exercise lost an average 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks compared to 2.2% in the placebo group who did not take the Wegovy pill. Nearly 80% of patients taking the Wegovy pill lost 5% or more of their starting weight.
How to take the Wegovy pill
Always follow your prescriber’s instructions when taking your Wegovy tablet. If you’re unsure, speak to your prescriber before you start your treatment.
To ensure your body absorbs the Wegovy pill properly:
- Take one Wegovy pill in the morning on an empty stomach – do not eat anything for at least eight hours before your dose
- Do not split, crush or chew the pill
- Wait at least 30 minutes after taking your Wegovy dose before you eat or drink any food, or take any other oral medicine
If you miss a dose, don’t worry. Skip your missed dose and take your next dose the day after as you normally would.
If you take an extra dose by accident, speak to your prescriber right away for advice. You may feel side effects, such as feeling sick.
Wegovy tablet dosages
When you first start treatment with Wegovy tablets, you’re likely to start on the lowest dose (1.5mg). Then, your prescriber gradually increases the dose until you reach the maintenance dose (25mg). You’ll continue your weight loss journey on the maintenance dose for as long as you want or need to.
A typical weight loss treatment schedule with Wegovy tablets looks like:
- Month 1: 1.5mg tablet once a day – this is the starting dose
- Month 2: 4mg tablet once a day
- Month 3: 9mg tablet once a day
- Month 4+: 25mg tablet once a day – this is the maintenance dose
Your prescriber may delay progression to a higher dose or move you back to a previous dose if you’re struggling with side effects. They’ll monitor your condition and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
What are the side effects of the Wegovy tablet?
Like any treatment, the Wegovy tablet may cause some side effects. While most are mild and go away as your body gets used to the medication, others can be more serious and need medical help. You may get some of the following side effects, or you may get none of them.
Common side effects include:
- Feeling and being sick
- Being gassy, having diarrhoea or constipation
- Headaches or dizziness
- Stomach pains, bloating or indigestion
- Heartburn or acid reflux
- Low blood sugar in people with diabetes, such as feeling lightheaded, a fast heartbeat and breaking out into a cold sweat
Not everybody gets these symptoms, but if you notice any of the following, seek urgent medical help:
- Changes to your vision in people with type 2 diabetes, such as worsening eyesight or suddenly losing vision
- A severe allergic reaction (also called anaphylaxis)
- Severe pain in your stomach or back that doesn’t go away – this could be a sign of pancreatitis
- Kidney or bladder stones, which may show as lower back pain and changes to bathroom habits, such as difficulty passing urine
- Gallbladder problems, which may cause tummy pain, fever, or yellowing skin and eyes
- Severe constipation, which may cause bloating, vomiting and stomach pain

How to switch from Wegovy injections to Wegovy pills
If you’re currently taking the Wegovy injection, you may be able to switch to the daily Wegovy pill. Some people may start their Wegovy pill treatment one week after their last Wegovy injection dose. Your prescriber will let you know if this is a safe option for you.
Your Wegovy pill dose may also change. For example, if you’re currently having weekly 2.4mg Wegovy injections, you may be able to go directly to daily 25mg Wegovy pills. Your prescriber will advise you on the appropriate dose switch for you.

There are certain medications that need to be managed carefully when used alongside Wegovy tablets, including:
- Levothyroxine for thyroid issues
- Oral blood-clotting medication (also called anticoagulants), such as warfarin
- Other GLP-1 agonist treatments, such as Saxenda or Mounjaro
