About the product

Mounjaro injections

The Mounjaro injection is a weekly prescription-only weight loss treatment containing tirzepatide. It works by copying two hormones in the body called GLP-1 and GIP to help regulate your appetite and blood sugar, slow digestion and reduce food cravings so you feel satisfied for longer.

Mounjaro is a weekly treatment that can help support effective weight loss progress when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased exercise. Studies show it can help people lose up to 25.3% of their body weight with regular long-term use. Mounjaro can also have a positive impact on other weight-related health issues, such as obstructive sleep apnoea, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Mounjaro Injections For Weight Loss

Mounjaro is a prescription-only weight loss injection treatment you take once a week. The active ingredient in Mounjaro is tirzepatide, which is a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Tirzepatide is also a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor agonist. This means Mounjaro targets two receptors at the same time, which may produce a more effective weight loss effect than other GLP-1 medications that only target one receptor, such as Wegovy.

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medication used to help support weight loss or management alongside diet and exercise. You can get a prescription for Mounjaro if you:

  • Have obesity, which means your BMI is 30 or higher
  • Are overweight and have another weight-related health issue, which means your BMI is between 27 and 30, and you also have a condition linked to your weight, such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease

The active ingredient in Mounjaro is called tirzepatide, which is a dual-agonist medicine. This means it activates two receptors in your brain at the same time. The two receptors Mounjaro activates are GLP-1 receptors and GIP receptors, which play a role in appetite and blood sugar control.

When Mounjaro activates the GLP-1 and GIP receptors, it can support weight loss by:

  • Slowing digestion in the stomach so you feel fuller for longer
  • Reducing appetite by telling your brain you’re full and reducing ‘food noise’, such as constant thoughts about food and cravings
  • Reducing the amount of glucose your liver produces to lower blood sugar levels

Mounjaro comes in a pre-filled injection pen you use to inject yourself with once a week. Always follow your prescriber’s guidance on how to use your injection.

The Mounjaro injection pen is a multi-dose pen. This means one injection pen is pre-filled with all the doses you need for that month. For a four week treatment cycle, you inject yourself once a week using the same injection pen. After each dose, place the cap back onto the pen and safely store it until your next dose.

While you can use your Mounjaro injection pen at any time of the day, you should use it on the same day every week. For example, if you started your Mounjaro treatment on a Monday, you should continue your treatment every Monday.

The recommended areas to inject Mounjaro are the stomach, upper thighs, and the back of your upper arms. While you can inject Mounjaro into the same area every week, it’s a good idea to avoid injecting the same injection spot as your previous injection. This will help reduce skin irritation, discomfort and potential bruising.

If you also inject insulin for another condition, avoid injecting Mounjaro and insulin in the same area.

Clinical studies show Mounjaro supports effective weight loss when part of a treatment plan involving a calorie-controlled diet and more physical activity. In the long-term, Mounjaro also helps people sustain their weight loss progress.

A 2024 study of 783 adults who were overweight or had obesity using weekly Mounjaro injections over 88 weeks showed:

  • Patients taking Mounjaro over 88 weeks lost an overall average of 25.3% of their starting body weight
  • During the first 36 weeks of treatment, patients taking Mounjaro achieved an average 20.9% drop in weight
  • Patients who continued treatment after 36 weeks lost an extra 5.5%, but those who switched to  a placebo pill regained 14.0%

Like all medical treatments, Mounjaro may cause side effects in some people. Many side effects are moderate and go away with time, but others can be serious and need medical help. You may get some of the following side effects or you may not get any at all.

Most people get these side effects when they first start treatment and when their dose increases. They’re often mild and go away as your body adapts to the medication.

  • Feeling and being sick
  • Stomach pain
  • Changes to bathroom habits, such as diarrhoea or constipation
  • Risk of low blood sugar, which may present as a headache, feeling drowsy or weak, a fast heartbeat, dizziness.
  • Being gassier than usual, such as burping or bloating
  • Indigestion
  • Heartburn or acid reflux
  • Skin reactions at the injection site, such as itchy, red skin or bruising

Mounjaro may cause some serious side effects that need urgent medical help. They’re not common, but it’s good to know what to look out for. Seek immediate medical help if you notice:

  • Persistent pain in the stomach and back with or without vomiting and nausea – this could be a sign of pancreatitis
  • Difficulty breathing, a fast heartbeat, or swelling of the lips, tongue or throat – this could be a severe allergic reaction (called anaphylaxis)

When you get your Mounjaro injection pen, it’s important you store it correctly to keep your treatment safe to use.

  • Before opening: Store your Mounjaro injection pen in the fridge – do not freeze it.
  • After opening: Either store your Mounjaro in the fridge or in a cool (below 30°C), dry place away from direct sunlight. You can store it for up to 30 days after opening.

Yes, it’s possible to switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro under medical supervision by an experienced health professional. After you stop Wegovy, you may need to wait before you start Mounjaro as they have different active ingredients. This gives your body time to adjust and reduces the risk of side effects.

Before you make the switch, it’s important to:

  • Let your prescriber know you want to stop Wegovy and start Mounjaro
  • Let your new prescriber know you previously had weight loss treatment with Wegovy, including how long you had treatment for and at what dose, and when your last dose was

This is essential to ensure the switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro is safe and minimises the risk of treatment-related side effects for you.

If you want to switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro, you can get a private prescription for Mounjaro with us at My Chemist Plus. Fill out our simple medical questionnaire to help our experienced prescribers tailor your treatment plan to ensure the transition is safe and appropriate for you.

Mounjaro treatment happens in stages. You may notice some changes immediately, such as reduced cravings, but others build progressively with time.

  • Within 48 hours: Mounjaro starts to work straightaway in the body. A few days after your first injection, you may notice a change in appetite or that you get full quicker during meals.
  • Weeks 1 to 4: As your body adapts to the 2.5mg starter dose, you may see some early weight loss. Patients can lose up to 4% of their starting weight in the first month.
  • Weeks 4 to 12: As you progress through to the 7.5mg dose, the physical effects of treatment will be more noticeable, particularly if you’re eating better and exercising more.
  • Weeks 12+: Mounjaro is at its most effective at the higher maintenance dose. Clinical trials show long-term consistent use can support around 20% weight loss in patients over the course of their journey.

Remember, everyone’s weight loss journey is their own. The most important thing is to stay consistent with your weekly Mounjaro injections and focusing on better lifestyle choices to help Mounjaro work effectively from day one.

At My Chemist Plus, we support our patients with their weight loss treatment using the latest evidence-based medicines, including Mounjaro. Start your consultation with one of our UK-registered prescribers to find out whether Mounjaro is right for you.

Mounjaro is a weekly injection you do yourself at home. But, sometimes you may forget whether you’ve taken a dose or not.

If you miss a dose and it’s been 4 days or less, take your dose as soon as you remember. You can then take your next dose on the day you normally take it.

If you miss a dose and it’s been more than four days, skip the missed dose. Then, you can take your next dose on the day you normally take it.

If you accidentally take an extra dose, contact your prescriber as soon as you can for guidance. You may get side effects from an extra dose, such as nausea and vomiting.

As Mounjaro is approved in the UK for long-term use, you can take Mounjaro for as long as it is safe and appropriate for you to do so. If Mounjaro is supporting safe weight loss as part of your treatment plan and you tolerate it well, your prescriber may recommend continuing your treatment.

Your prescriber may stop Mounjaro treatment if:

  • You have not lost at least 5% of your starting body weight within six months of treatment. This may mean Mounjaro is not suitable for you and you may benefit from an alternative instead, such as Wegovy.
  • You are struggling to cope with side effects, such as nausea or diarrhoea
  • You do not want to continue Mounjaro treatment
  • You’re deciding to have a baby as Mounjaro should not be used during pregnancy

While Mounjaro can be an effective addition to a weight loss treatment plan, it may not be suitable for everybody. If you’re allergic to tirzepatide, you should not take Mounjaro. Instead, there are other GLP-1 medications that may be suitable for you, such as the Wegovy injection or tablet.

Mounjaro may not be suitable if you:

  • Have a condition affecting how your stomach digests food, such as gastroparesis
  • Have a history of pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas
  • Have an eye condition, such as diabetic retinopathy or macular oedema
  • Take insulin or sulphonylurea for diabetes

At My Chemist Plus, we offer a range of GLP-1 injections and tablets to help support clinically safe and effective weight loss and management for a variety of patients. Fill out our simple health form and one of our UK-registered prescribers can suggest a treatment that’s effective and appropriate for you.

Each Mounjaro pen contains four doses of treatment. For example, if you’re taking 2.5mg of Mounjaro, your pen will have four 2.5mg doses of Mounjaro. This means each time you inject yourself, you will inject a 2.5mg dose.

How much Mounjaro costs per month will vary depending on where you get your treatment from and at what dose. At My Chemist Plus, one month of treatment at 2.5mg of Mounjaro costs £XX whereas one month of treatment at 10mg costs £XX. You can only order Mounjaro with a prescription after a clinical assessment by one of our UK-registered prescribers to make sure it’s safe and appropriate for you.

Yes, you need a prescription for Mounjaro as it’s a prescription-only medication and requires medical supervision during treatment. You can get a prescription for Mounjaro through your GP or privately through a certified online pharmacy, such as My Chemist Plus. You cannot buy Mounjaro or any other GLP-1 medication over the counter.

To get a private Mounjaro prescription for weight loss with My Chemist Plus, fill out our simple medical questionnaire to help our specialist prescribers decide whether Mounjaro is a safe and effective treatment for you.

Your prescriber considers several factors when deciding what dose of Mounjaro you should take. These include whether you’ve had previous treatment with a GLP-1 or if you have another medical condition, such as diabetes. Most people start at the lowest dose (2.5mg) before gradually increasing over time.

The Mounjaro injection comes in six doses for weight loss treatment: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg.

Yes, you can take paracetamol with Mounjaro as they do not interact or interfere with each other. If you’re concerned about Mounjaro interacting with any medicine you take, speak to your prescriber for guidance.

It’s possible that Mounjaro may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, such as birth control pills. It’s important you let your prescriber know if you’re taking oral contraceptives alongside Mounjaro.

If you take oral contraceptives, you should also use condoms for four weeks after starting Mounjaro treatment and for four weeks after you go up a dose.

Mounjaro is a weight loss treatment you inject yourself once a week. There is no pill form of Mounjaro. If you’re uncomfortable with needles or would prefer taking pills, you may want to explore the Wegovy tablet, which is an oral GLP-1 you take once a day.

For some people, it may be possible to start Mounjaro at 5mg if it’s safe to do so, such as if you’re switching from a different GLP-1 to Mounjaro. For most people, the starting dose for Mounjaro is 2.5mg.
