About the product

Wegovy injection

The Wegovy injection is a weekly prescription-only weight loss treatment containing semaglutide. It works by mimicking GLP-1, a natural hormone in the body that helps regulate appetite, slows digestion and keeps you feeling satisfied for longer after a meal.

Wegovy injections are a weekly treatment. The starting treatment dose is 0.25mg, which is gradually increased every four weeks to help your body adjust and minimise side effects. They can help support effective weight loss when paired with a lower calorie diet and increased exercise, helping people lose up to 18.7% of their starting body weight in the long-term. Wegovy can also help improve other heart-related weight issues to help reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

If you’re uncomfortable with injections, Wegovy also comes in a daily tablet form for a convenient, needle-free alternative to weight management.

Wegovy Injections For Weight Loss

Wegovy injections are a prescription-only GLP-1 weight loss medication containing semaglutide. They contain the same active ingredient (semaglutide) as the Wegovy tablet, but are given as a weekly injection instead of a daily pill.

Wegovy injections contain semaglutide, which looks like the body’s natural GLP-1 hormone. The GLP-1 hormone is responsible for appetite and hunger. By mimicking this hormone, Wegovy can help:

  • Reduce your appetite, so you naturally feel less hungry
  • Slow digestion in the stomach, so you feel satisfied for longer
  • Reduce ‘food noise’, so you think about food less and have less intense cravings

These changes can make it easier to eat less in a gradual and natural way. That’s why Wegovy injections can help support safe and sustainable weight loss over time when paired with a reduced calorie diet with healthier eating habits and regular exercise.

In the UK, the Wegovy injection is licensed to help adults lose and maintain their weight alongside diet and exercise. To get a prescription for Wegovy injections, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Have obesity, which is a BMI 30 or higher
  • Be overweight (BMI between 27 and 30) with an additional weight-related health problem, such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, or obstructive sleep apnoea

Wegovy injections come as a pre-filled pen that you use to inject yourself with every week. How you use a Wegovy injection pen depends on the dose you’re taking:

  • The 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1.0mg, 1.7mg and 2.4mg Wegovy injection pens are multi-dose pens. Each multi-dose pen contains four doses. This means you will use the same injection pen for a four week treatment course.
  • The 7.2mg Wegovy injection pen is a single-dose pen. Each single-dose pen contains one weekly dose, and must be safely thrown away after use. For a four week treatment course, you will have four separate 7.2mg pens.

To help ensure your treatment is working effectively, schedule your injection at the same time every week. This will also help you remember to take your jab as it becomes part of your weekly routine.

The recommended injection areas for Wegovy are the upper arms, stomach and upper legs. You can inject the same body area, but avoid injecting the exact same spot as your last injection. Instead, it’s a good idea to switch injection sites with every dose. This will help minimise discomfort and skin irritation.

Before your first injection, your prescriber will explain how to use the injection pen, and make sure you’re comfortable doing it on your own.

When paired with healthier eating habits and more physical activity, Wegovy injections are clinically effective at supporting sustainable weight loss in people who are overweight or have obesity.

A 2025 study of 1407 patients compared the effectiveness of 7.2mg and 2.4mg weekly Wegovy injections and found:

  • Patients in the 7.2mg group lost on average 18.7% of their starting weight
  • Patients in the 2.4mg group lost on average 15.6% of their starting weight
  • Patients in the placebo group who did not take Wegovy injections lost an average of 3.9% of their starting weight

A 2021 study of 1961 adults using weekly 2.4mg Wegovy injections over 68 weeks found:

  • Patients lost an average of 14.9% of their starting body weight compared to 2.4% in the placebo group
  • Over 86% of patients lost at least 5% of their starting body weight, showing improvements in blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Over 50% of patients lost over 15% of their starting body weight

Like all medication, Wegovy injections may cause side effects in some people. While most side effects of Wegovy are mild and ease as your body adjusts, others can be more serious and need medical help. You may get some of the following side effects or you may get none of them.

People taking Wegovy injections report feeling:

  • Feeling and being sick
  • Being gassy, having diarrhoea or constipation
  • Headaches or dizziness
  • Stomach pains, bloating or indigestion
  • Heartburn or acid reflux
  • Low blood sugar in people with diabetes, such as feeling lightheaded, a fast heartbeat and breaking out into a cold sweat

Not everybody gets these symptoms, but if you notice any of the following, seek urgent medical help:

  • Changes to vision in people with type 2 diabetes, such as worsening eyesight or suddenly losing vision
  • A severe allergic reaction (also called anaphylaxis)
  • Intense pain in your stomach or back that doesn’t go away – this could be a sign of pancreatitis
  • Kidney or bladder stones, which may show as lower back pain and changes to bathroom habits, such as difficulty passing urine
  • Gallbladder problems, which may cause tummy pain, fever, or yellowing skin and eyes
  • Severe constipation, which may cause bloating, vomiting and stomach pain

You can find the full list of side effects in the patient information leaflet in your medication box.

It’s very important to store your Wegovy injections properly to make sure they’re safe for use.

  • Before opening: Store your Wegovy pens in the fridge – avoid putting them at the back of the fridge near the cooling element. Do not freeze your injection pens.
  • After opening: Either store your Wegovy pen in the fridge or in a cool (below 30°C), dry place away from direct sunlight.

If you’re on the 7.2mg dose, store your unopened Wegovy injection pens in the fridge. After you use a pen, you can safely discard it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Wegovy injections are safe to use and have been approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for weight loss treatment. The MHRA are responsible for making sure any medical treatment and device in the UK is safe and effective for its intended use.

How long you take Wegovy injections for weight loss depends on your weight goal and how well you tolerate the medication. Because you start Wegovy injections at the lowest dose and gradually increase, many patients need to take Wegovy injections for several months, including a maintenance period at the maximum recommended dose.

As a licensed treatment for weight loss in the UK, it’s safe to take Wegovy injections long-term so long as it’s supporting effective weight loss or maintenance and not causing severe side effects. If you want to come off Wegovy injections, speak to your prescriber, who can help you safely stop your treatment.

If you have not lost at least 5% of your starting body weight after 6 months, your prescriber may recommend you stop Wegovy treatment. This is because Wegovy may not be an effective option for you. They may discuss alternative options, such as Mounjaro.

You do not necessarily have to increase your Wegovy injection dose in line with the recommended schedule. The recommended treatment schedule suggests increasing your Wegovy injection dose every four weeks until you reach the maintenance dose, which is 2.4mg or 7.2mg, depending on BMI. This is because the most effective weight loss is seen at this dose.

But, there are circumstances where your prescriber may recommend staying at a lower dose for longer, such as if you’re losing a significant amount of weight or you’re struggling with side effects at a higher dose. Your prescriber closely monitors your weight and overall condition to make sure your Wegovy treatment and weight loss progress remains safe and beneficial.

Some side effects of Wegovy are very common and usually pass with time, such as a headache, feeling and being sick, and stomach problems (e.g. diarrhoea or constipation). Many people find they have side effects when they first begin treatment with Wegovy and when they move up a dose. As the body adjusts, mild side effects eventually get better and pass. For some people, this can be after a few days but for others it could take a few weeks.

Side effects of Wegovy injections range from mild and temporary, to more serious side effects that require urgent medical care. Your prescriber will help you understand the risks and benefits of Wegovy treatment, including the signs to look out for.

Serious side effects of Wegovy injections include:

  • Any gradual or sudden changes to vision – you may have a higher risk of this if you have diabetes
  • Inflammation to the pancreas (acute pancreatitis), which may feel like severe pain in the abdomen and feeling or being sick
  • Kidney or bladder stones, which may show as back or lower tummy pain and changes to urination and urine colour
  • A severe allergic reaction (also called anaphylaxis)
  • Hip fractures
  • Severe constipation (also called a bowel obstruction)If you notice any of these symptoms, seek urgent care and speak to your prescriber.

While Wegovy injections can be an effective addition to a weight loss or management plan, it may not be suitable for everybody.

Let your prescriber know if you have any of the following as Wegovy may not be suitable for you:

  • Diabetes
  • Kidney problems
  • A history of pancreas issues, for instance pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • A condition affecting your digestive system, such as gastroparesis where the stomach empties slowly
  • You take certain medication, such as levothyroxine for thyroid disease or anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin, acenocoumarol)
  • You’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have a child

If Wegovy is not suitable for you, there are alternatives available, such as Mounjaro. At My Chemist Plus, our specialist prescribers will help you explore options to find a treatment that’s safe and effective for you, whether that’s Wegovy or an alternative. Fill out a simple medical form to get started.

Do not take Wegovy if you’re allergic to semaglutide, if you or a family member have had medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2).

It’s important to keep your unopened Wegovy injection pens in the fridge. Once opened, a Wegovy injection pen can be stored out of the fridge for up to 28 days in temperatures below 30°C. If your Wegovy pen has been out of the fridge for longer than 28 days or at temperatures higher than 30°C, do not use it and safely throw it away.

Yes, you can inject Wegovy cold immediately after taking it out of the fridge.

There are certain medications that need to be managed carefully when used alongside Wegovy injections. To make sure your treatment is safe and appropriate for you, speak to your prescriber if you take any of the following:

  • Levothyroxine for thyroid issues
  • Oral blood-clotting medication (also called anticoagulants), such as warfarin
  • Other GLP-1 agonist treatments, such as Saxenda or Mounjaro

While you can drink alcohol during treatment with Wegovy injections, it’s not recommended. This is because alcohol can make side effects of Wegovy worse, such as nausea and diarrhoea. It can also impact your weight loss progress as alcohol tends to be high in calories and can affect your blood sugar levels.

If you do decide to drink alcohol while having Wegovy treatment, drink in moderation and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Yes, the active ingredient in Wegovy injections is semaglutide.

Once you open your Wegovy injection, it can last for six weeks at room temperature (below 30°C) or in the fridge. Do not use your Wegovy injection past its expiration date, which you can find on the pen itself or the medicine box it came in.

While Wegovy and Ozempic both contain semaglutide, they are not the same. In the UK, Wegovy is licensed for weight loss and management whereas Ozempic is licensed for diabetes treatment. Because they’re used to treat different conditions, they have different doses and treatment schedules. You should never use Wegovy or Ozempic as a replacement for the other.

Generally, you cannot start Wegovy at 0.5mg, 1.0mg or 1.7mg. When you first start treatment with Wegovy injections, your prescriber will start you at the lowest dose. The starting dose for Wegovy injections is 0.25mg for four weeks. After four weeks, your prescriber reviews your condition before increasing to 0.5mg. This continues until you reach the maintenance dose of either 2.4mg, or an optional maximum dose of 7.2mg (for a BMI of 30 or more).

Gradually increasing your dose allows your body to adjust to the medication and reduce treatment-related side effects. Your prescriber may extend how long you stay at a dose or lower your dose if you’re struggling to cope with side effects or if you’re losing a significant amount of weight. This makes sure your treatment remains effective, safe and sustainable for you and your body.

If you’ve had weight loss injections before, your prescriber may consider starting your Wegovy treatment at a different dose to the starting dose if it’s safe to do so.
