Product information: Bonjela Adult Gel

Bonjela Adult Gel is a non-prescription oral gel containing choline salicylate, which relieves pain and inflammation, and cetalkonium chloride, an antiseptic that helps fight minor mouth infection. It is applied to the sore area in the mouth.

Bonjela relieves pain and discomfort from common mouth ulcers and cold sores. It can also help sore spots and ulcers caused by dentures or braces to heal. The gel provides symptom relief; it does not remove the cause of a cold sore or correct a denture or brace that keeps rubbing.

This product is for people aged 16 years and over. Do not use it if you have an active stomach ulcer or are allergic to aspirin, other salicylates or anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen. Check with a doctor or pharmacist if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or take other medicines.

Side Effects

The gel may cause a burning sensation on damaged tissue. Stop using it and seek immediate medical help if you develop wheezing, difficulty breathing, itching or swelling of the face, tongue or throat, as these may be signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Do not use more than directed on the label or leaflet, because too much salicylate can be harmful. Ask a doctor or pharmacist about any side effect that concerns you, and read the PIL for full safety information.

Frequently asked questions about Bonjela Adult Gel

It is used to relieve pain and discomfort from common mouth ulcers and cold sores. It may also aid healing of sore spots and ulcers caused by dentures or braces. Its active ingredients are choline salicylate and cetalkonium chloride.

Choline salicylate helps relieve pain and inflammation in the sore area. Cetalkonium chloride is an antiseptic that helps fight minor mouth infection. The gel is applied locally inside the mouth or on the gums.

Yes. It can relieve the pain and discomfort of common mouth ulcers. Most mouth ulcers clear within a week or two; a gel may ease symptoms while they heal, but persistent or unusual ulcers need assessment.

Bonjela is not an antiviral medicine and does not clear the herpes simplex virus. Ask a pharmacist if you need advice about a cold sore treatment.

Yes. The leaflet includes sore spots and ulcers caused by dentures or braces. Apply the gel to the sore area, not directly to dentures, and wait at least 30 minutes before putting dentures back in. A dentist or orthodontist can assess an appliance that continues to rub.

Use a clean finger to massage the gel onto the sore area, following the pack and PIL instructions. Do not exceed the stated amount or frequency. For denture sores, leave the dentures out for at least 30 minutes after applying it.

It must not be used by children under 16. The salicylate ingredient has a possible association with Reye’s syndrome in children. Ask a pharmacist about an age-appropriate alternative.

Do not use it if you have an active stomach ulcer or an allergy to salicylates, aspirin, other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, or any of its ingredients. Check the PIL and ask a pharmacist if you are unsure.

Ask a doctor or pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding. Also check first if you take aspirin or other salicylates, blood-thinning medicines, or medicines for gout, because interactions are possible.

Seek advice if symptoms worsen or have not improved after 7 days of using Bonjela. See a GP or dentist if an ulcer lasts more than 3 weeks, looks different from your usual ulcers, bleeds or becomes more painful and red.
