No. Selsun 2.5% medicated shampoo was discontinued by its manufacturer in September 2022 and is no longer supplied as a UK medicine. Nizoral 2% remains available and treats dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis – the same scalp conditions treated by Selsun – using a different active ingredient.

Selsun 2.5% was discontinued by its manufacturer in September 2022. It was not an MHRA safety recall. If you used Selsun for dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis, Nizoral 2% is an available UK treatment for the same conditions.

No. Selsun contained selenium sulfide 2.5%, whereas Nizoral contains ketoconazole 2%. They are different but both treat dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Yes – if you used Selsun for dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis, Nizoral 2% is a suitable UK treatment option for many people because it is licensed for the same conditions. If you are unsure what is causing your scalp symptoms, ask a pharmacist or doctor.

Nizoral 2% treats and helps prevent dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis – the same conditions Selsun was used to treat. These conditions can cause scalp flaking, itching and redness.

Nizoral contains ketoconazole 2%, an antifungal medicine that targets Malassezia yeast associated with dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Controlling this yeast helps reduce the flaking, itching and redness caused by these conditions.

Wet the hair and scalp, apply a small amount and massage it into a lather. Leave it on for 3 to 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth, and follow the leaflet supplied with your pack.

Use it twice a week for 2 to 4 weeks. Once symptoms have cleared, it can be used once every 1 to 2 weeks to help prevent them returning. Do not use it more often than directed.

Symptoms may start to improve within 2 to 3 weeks, but complete the recommended 2-to-4-week treatment course. Speak to a pharmacist or doctor if symptoms are worsening or have not cleared after 4 weeks.

Not for the usual treatment of dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis. Use it twice weekly for 2 to 4 weeks, followed by once every 1 to 2 weeks for prevention if needed.

Most adults and children aged 12 years and over can use ketoconazole shampoo. Ask a pharmacist or doctor before using it for a child under 12.

NHS guidance says ketoconazole shampoo can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding because only tiny amounts are absorbed. Tell your pharmacist or doctor if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding if you have any concerns.

Side effects are uncommon when used correctly, but irritation, itching, burning or redness can occur. Stop using it and seek advice if irritation is severe, spreads or does not improve. Seek urgent help for signs of a serious allergic reaction.

No. Nizoral 2% shampoo is not licensed as a treatment for hair loss.Â
