About the product
Opticrom Eye Drops for Hayfever
What is Opticrom?
Opticrom eye drops contain sodium cromoglicate, an anti-allergy medicine used to help relieve eye symptoms caused by seasonal allergic rhinitis, also known as hayfever. It is commonly used for symptoms such as itchy eyes, red eyes, watery eyes and irritation caused by pollen.
As this is a Pharmacy medicine, a short suitability check may be needed before purchase to make sure it is appropriate for you.
How does Opticrom work?
Sodium cromoglicate helps stabilise mast cells in the eyes. These cells release histamine and other chemicals during an allergic reaction. By helping to prevent this release, Opticrom reduces itching, redness, watering and irritation caused by hayfever.
What is Opticrom used for on this page?
On this product page, Opticrom eye drops are used specifically for:
- Eye symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis, also known as hayfever
- Relief of itchy, red, watery or irritated eyes caused by pollen
It is not used here for:
- Eye infections
- Eye injuries or chemical exposure
- Sudden severe eye pain or changes in vision
- Contact lens discomfort that is not related to allergy
Opticrom should be used according to the pack directions and only if it is suitable for you.
Who may be suitable for Opticrom?
You may be suitable if:
- You have eye symptoms typical of hayfever during pollen season
- Your main symptoms are itching, redness or watering of the eyes
- You would like a non-steroid eye drop option for allergy relief
Points to consider before using it:
- Your symptom pattern and likely triggers
- Whether symptoms affect one eye or both eyes
- Whether you wear contact lenses - these should be avoided when applying Opticrom eye drops
- Other eye drops, medicines or health conditions you have
Who should not use Opticrom or needs pharmacy advice first?
Do not use without advice if you:
- Are allergic to sodium cromoglicate or any of the ingredients in the drops
- Have severe eye pain, light sensitivity, sticky discharge or changes in vision
- Have symptoms in one eye only without a clear allergic cause
- Think you may have an eye infection or injury
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding without checking suitability first with your GP
Use with caution and seek pharmacist or medical advice if you:
- Wear soft contact lenses (avoid wearing whilst using Opticrom eye drops)
- Use other eye drops or eye medicines
- Have symptoms that are not clearly seasonal or not responding to usual allergy treatment
- Need treatment for long periods or have very severe symptoms
How do I use Opticrom?
Follow the directions on the pack unless a healthcare professional has advised otherwise. A common way to use it is:
- One or two drops into each affected eye, four times a day
Practical advice:
- Wash your hands before and after use
- Avoid touching the dropper tip against your eye or any surface
- If you use other eye drops, leave a gap between products
- Remove contact lenses before use if advised on the pack, and wait before reinserting them as directed
Opticrom often works best when used regularly during the period you are exposed to pollen.
General self-care advice
- Keep windows closed on high pollen days where possible
- Wear wraparound sunglasses outdoors to reduce pollen reaching the eyes
- Rinse or bathe the eyes gently with cool water if they feel irritated
- Shower and change clothes after being outdoors
- Check pollen forecasts and limit outdoor activity when counts are very high
Side effects and when to get help
Common side effects can include mild stinging or burning just after the drops are used. This is usually brief.
Seek medical advice urgently if you develop severe eye pain, marked swelling, worsening redness, changes in vision, or signs of a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Some people notice relief quite quickly, but it may work best when used regularly over several days during allergy season. It is often more effective when started early in the symptom period.
Yes. It is often used regularly throughout the period when pollen is triggering your symptoms, following the pack directions.
No. Opticrom eye drops do not usually cause drowsiness.
Yes. Opticrom is often used alongside other hayfever treatments such as antihistamine tablets or steroid nasal sprays if needed. Please consult with your pharmacist or GP if you feel this option is necessary.
You should not wear soft contact lenses while using Opticrom allergy eye drops. The preservative in the drops (benzalkonium chloride) can be absorbed by the lenses, causing eye irritation and discolouration of the lenses. Always remove lenses, apply the drops, and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
Use the drops when you remember, unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not use extra drops to make up for a missed dose.
Seek review if symptoms do not improve, if you have pain, light sensitivity, sticky discharge, changes in vision, or if you are not sure your symptoms are caused by hayfever.
No. This information supports, but does not replace, advice from a pharmacist, GP, optometrist or another qualified healthcare professional. Always follow the directions supplied with your medicine.
