About the product

What is Fluconazole?

Fluconazole is an antifungal medicine used to treat yeast infections caused by Candida. On this page it is used for the short-course treatment of uncomplicated vaginal thrush in adults after a short suitability assessment.

As this is a Pharmacy medicine, a short consultation may be needed before purchase to make sure it is appropriate for you.

How does Fluconazole work?

Fluconazole stops Candida from making ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane. This weakens the fungus and helps clear the infection.

What is Fluconazole used for on this page?

On this product page, fluconazole is used specifically for:

- Uncomplicated vaginal thrush with typical symptoms such as itching, soreness and thick white discharge without a strong odour

It is not used here for:

- Penile thrush

- Recurrent thrush without further medical review

- Severe symptoms with fever, pelvic or abdominal pain

- Suspected bacterial vaginosis, trichomonas or other sexually transmitted infections

- Children

Fluconazole should only be used if it is suitable for you.

Who may be suitable for Fluconazole?

You may be suitable if:

- Your symptoms are typical of vaginal thrush

- You are not pregnant and do not think you may be pregnant

- You do not have red-flag symptoms suggesting another cause

- You are able to take an oral capsule and follow the after-care advice

Points to consider before using it:

- Your symptom pattern and duration

- Previous episodes and how they responded to treatment

- Any medical history including liver disease, heart rhythm problems, diabetes or reduced immunity

- All other medicines you take that could interact

Who should not use Fluconazole or needs medical advice first?

Do not use without medical advice if you:

- Are pregnant, trying for a baby or think you may be pregnant

- Are breastfeeding without checking suitability first

- Are over 60 with a first episode of symptoms

- Have abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic or abdominal pain, fever, smelly or green or yellow discharge, ulcers, blisters or pain during sex

- Have four or more episodes in a year, uncontrolled diabetes or a weakened immune system

- Are allergic to fluconazole or other azole antifungals

- Have been told you have long QT or serious heart rhythm problems

Use with caution and seek pharmacist or medical advice if you:

- Have liver disease

- Take medicines that can interact with fluconazole, including warfarin, certain statins, phenytoin, carbamazepine, some diabetes tablets, methadone or medicines that affect heart rhythm

- Have symptoms that are not clearly due to uncomplicated vaginal thrush

How do I take Fluconazole?

Follow the directions supplied with the product unless a healthcare professional has advised otherwise. The usual dose for uncomplicated vaginal thrush is:

- One 150 mg capsule as a single dose

Practical advice:

- Swallow the capsule whole with water

- It can be taken with or without food

- If symptoms persist beyond 72 hours or recur within a short time, seek further medical advice

General self-care advice

- Keep the genital area cool and dry

- Avoid tight or synthetic underwear where possible

- Avoid perfumed soaps, bubble baths or vaginal washes

- Avoid sex until symptoms settle if possible

- If symptoms are more suggestive of bacterial vaginosis, such as a fishy odour or thin grey discharge, seek assessment because a different treatment is needed

Side effects and when to get help

Common side effects can include nausea, stomach upset, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness or rash. These are usually mild.

Seek medical advice urgently if you develop severe rash or blistering, swelling of the face or tongue, difficulty breathing, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, palpitations or fainting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many people notice improvement within 24 to 48 hours. It can take up to 72 hours for symptoms to settle fully.

Most uncomplicated cases clear with one 150 mg capsule. If symptoms persist beyond 72 hours or recur, seek advice from your GP rather than repeating treatment without checking the cause.

No. Oral fluconazole is generally not recommended during pregnancy for vaginal thrush. If you are pregnant or could be pregnant, seek advice about a suitable topical treatment instead.

Some product leaflets allow breastfeeding after a single 150 mg dose, but some over-the-counter product information advises not to use it while breastfeeding unless a doctor has told you to. If you are breastfeeding, check with a pharmacist or doctor before use.

Fluconazole does not reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraception. Topical thrush treatments may affect latex condoms or diaphragms, so always check the product information for any other treatments you are using.

If symptoms return quickly, if you have repeated episodes, or if you are not sure it is thrush, seek further advice. Recurrent thrush may need a different treatment plan or further investigation.

There is no known interaction with alcohol, but if you feel unwell it is sensible to keep intake low until you feel better.

Seek urgent advice if you develop severe pain, fever, vomiting, vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, a smelly discharge, blisters or ulcers, or signs of an allergic reaction.

No. This information supports, but does not replace, advice from a pharmacist, GP or another qualified healthcare professional. Always follow the directions supplied with your medicine.
