About the product

What is amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin is a prescription antibiotic medication containing penicillin. You may be prescribed it to help clear a range of bacterial infections, including dental abscesses, wisdom tooth infections, or infections following dental surgery. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Amoxicillin is not suitable for people who are allergic to penicillin. Your prescriber will check your medical history to make sure amoxicillin is safe for you.

Amoxicillin for a tooth infection

Amoxicillin may be suitable if you:

  • Have swelling and pain from a tooth infection
  • Cannot access urgent dental care immediately
  • Have a fever or swollen glands

Amoxicillin is one possible treatment option for a tooth infection. Our prescribers will recommend the most appropriate treatment based on your symptoms.

During your online consultation, we’ll ask you about:

  • The infection, including location and any symptoms you’re feeling
  • Any medical conditions you have
  • Past or present medical allergies, such as to penicillin
  • Any medication or treatments you’re currently having
  • If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding

This will help your prescriber find a treatment that’s safe and effective for you. Antibiotics are only prescribed when clinically appropriate to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance.

What are the side effects of amoxicillin?

Like any treatment, amoxicillin can cause some side effects. Most are mild and pass with time, such as:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Skin rash.

We’ll explain what to look out for and ways to manage any side effects.

Rarely, amoxicillin can cause a serious allergic reaction and requires urgent medical attention. Signs may include severe skin reactions, or prolonged or severe diarrhoea.

Please call 999 or go straight to A&E if you have:

  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat

If you notice any changes not listed above or if any side effects become difficult to manage, please speak to your doctor or pharmacist for further guidance. You can also report it through the Yellow Card Scheme to help others take their medication safely.

If you have a tooth infection or a dental abscess and do not have a penicillin allergy, then amoxicillin may be suitable for you. This is because amoxicillin is an antibiotic that helps fight the bacteria responsible for the tooth infection, reducing swelling and pain.

Amoxicillin alone is not a treatment for a tooth infection. If you have a dental infection, it’s always best to book an appointment with your dentist for proper treatment.

Complete our online consultation for a clinical assessment by one of our experienced prescribers to find out whether you’re eligible for amoxicillin.

Yes, you can take amoxicillin for a dental abscess. But, not everybody will be prescribed amoxicillin, such as if you have a penicillin allergy. If amoxicillin isn’t suitable for you, there are alternatives available, such as metronidazole.

Our prescribers may recommend antibiotics if your infection has spread or dental treatment is delayed to help reduce symptoms. Fill out our simple medical form to help our prescribers decide whether amoxicillin is a safe and appropriate treatment for you.

You cannot buy amoxicillin over the counter at a pharmacy as amoxicillin is a prescription-only medication. This means you must have a prescription from a licensed prescriber to buy amoxicillin for a tooth infection.

If you suspect you have a tooth infection, you can fill out our simple online questionnaire to start your consultation with one of our UK-registered prescribers. Then, if prescribed, you can buy amoxicillin online through our online pharmacy.

Antibiotics, such as amoxicillin and metronidazole, do not fix the underlying cause of a dental abscess. Definitive treatment is dental care, which may include drainage, a root canal, or a tooth extraction.

Antibiotics are considered when there are signs of spreading infection or systemic illness (such as, facial swelling or fever), or when immediate dental treatment isn’t possible. Arrange a dental appointment as soon as possible.

Always follow your prescriber’s instructions and complete the full course of treatment even if you start feeling better. If you finish your course and still feel unwell, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

  • Take one tablet three times a day at regular times. For instance, one in the morning, one in the afternoon, and one in the evening.
  • Swallow the capsule with water – do not open the capsule.

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Wait around four hours before you take the next dose. Do not take two capsules at the same time to make up for the forgotten dose.

In adults, a course of amoxicillin treatment for a dental abscess can be up to five days. If you do not feel better after three days, speak to your doctor for further guidance. It’s very important you follow your prescriber’s advice and finish the full course of treatment as recommended.

How long it takes to clear the infection is different for everybody. Many people improve within 48 to 72 hours. If your symptoms do not improve or get worse, seek urgent dental or medical advice.

It’s important to understand amoxicillin does not treat the root cause of a tooth infection. If you have dental issues, always book an appointment with your dentist.

For adults, the recommended dosage is 500mg of amoxicillin three times a day for up to five days. Your specialist prescriber will help you understand your treatment schedule. This information is also included in the patient information leaflet inside your medication box.

If you have any questions or concerns at any point, log into your My Chemist Plus account to speak to us about a specific prescription, or email one of the friendly team who will be happy to assist you.

If you’re allergic to penicillin, amoxicillin is not suitable for you because it contains penicillin. For some people with a penicillin allergy, metronidazole may be more appropriate. Your prescriber will review your medical history during your consultation to consider the most suitable treatment for you.

Learn more about metronidazole and how it can help with a dental infection.

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, you can take amoxicillin if you need to. Just let your prescriber or doctor know during your consultation so they can offer you the right guidance.

If you’re breastfeeding, it’s possible for small amounts of amoxicillin to pass into your breastmilk. Very rarely, this can cause side effects in babies, such as diarrhoea, drowsiness or a rash. Before you start your treatment, your prescriber or doctor will let you know what to look out for and answer any concerns you may have.

You can drink alcohol during your treatment as alcohol does not interact with amoxicillin. But, it’s a good idea to avoid drinking alcohol during your treatment course.

Amoxicillin should not affect your ability to drive directly. But, some side effects may have an effect, such as an allergic reaction. If you feel unwell, do not drive or operate machinery. It’s best to wait until you feel better.

Amoxicillin does not affect the contraceptive pill directly. It also does not affect the emergency contraceptive pill. But, amoxicillin can cause vomiting or diarrhoea in some people.

If you’re vomiting or have diarrhoea for more than 24 hours, this may prevent your contraceptive pill from working. To find out what to do, read the patient information leaflet that comes with your contraceptive medication, speak to your doctor, or visit the NHS website for guidance.

Yes, it’s important to see your dentist even if you’re already taking amoxicillin for a dental abscess. Antibiotics help control the spread of infection, but they do not treat the underlying cause.

If you develop worsening swelling, fever, difficulty or pain opening your mouth (also called trismus), or problems breathing or swallowing, seek urgent care.
