FAQ's

Many people notice fewer cravings within the first week. Benefits usually increase after the quit date in week two, provided tablets are taken regularly.

Nausea is the most common side effect. Taking the dose with food and water helps. If persistent, speak to your prescriber about dose reduction.

Common: nausea, headache, indigestion, constipation or wind, abnormal dreams, difficulty sleeping, dry mouth and dizziness. Usually mild to moderate and improve with time.

Less common but important: mood changes, irritability, agitation, depressive symptoms or suicidal thoughts. If you notice significant mood or behaviour changes, stop the medicine and seek medical advice urgently.

Rare: seizures. Seek urgent help if you have a seizure.

Alcohol can lower inhibitions and trigger smoking. It may also increase dizziness or unusual behaviour for some people. Keep alcohol low, especially early in treatment.

Many people with stable cardiovascular disease use varenicline. Your prescriber will assess your individual risk and monitor symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness or palpitations. Seek urgent care if these occur.

Varenicline can cause dizziness and sleepiness in some people. Do not drive or operate machinery if affected.

Do not give up on the attempt. Keep taking varenicline as prescribed and use behavioural strategies. Discuss with your prescriber; a longer course or extra support may help.

Your prescriber may advise stopping at once or tapering the dose over a few days to minimise nausea or sleep disturbance. Continue with behavioural support to prevent relapse.

Some weight gain is common. Prepare with healthy snacks, regular meals, activity and hydration. The health benefits of quitting far outweigh modest weight changes.
