About Hemorrhoids (Piles)

Haemorrhoids are swollen veins in your anus and lower rectum which is also known as Piles. Haemorrhoids can develop internally inside the rectum or externally under the skin around the anus. The veins around your anus can stretch causing them to bulge and swell with increased pressure in the lower rectum.

The most common causes of haemorrhoids are usually caused by straining during bowel movements, sitting for long periods of time, being overweight or pregnant and can also be caused by regular heavy lifting. The risk of haemorrhoids can increase as you age as the tissues which support the veins in your anus and rectum can stretch and weaken.

The symptoms you may experience do depend on the type of haemorrhoid you have. The usual symptoms of haemorrhoids can include pain, discomfort and irritation around your anus. You may also notice bleeding during bowel movements due to straining when passing stools. We always recommend speaking to your GP if your symptoms last longer than a week, as rectal bleeding can be linked to other diseases such as anal cancer.

There are many things you can do to help to prevent haemorrhoids. Dietary changes by increasing fibre in your meals and drinking plenty of water are a great way to start. This can help soften stools and help you avoid straining when on the toilet.

Like many health conditions, most symptoms don’t go away on their own and you may need treatment. We have a wide range of treatments available in the form of ointments and suppositories to help relieve the unpleasant symptoms. We pride ourselves on offering such services discreetly for our customers.
