Oral contraceptives contain a small amount of the hormones your body produces during your menstrual cycle, they work to stop ovulation (egg release from the ovary), which in turn can prevent pregnancy. There are two main types, the combined pill, and the progesterone-only pill.

The combined pill contains both oestrogen and progestogen and is taken at the same time each day, usually for three weeks followed by a seven-day break, when you will have a “period”, also known as a withdrawal bleed.

The progestogen-only pill, or mini pill is taken every day without a break.
