About Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile disfunction is a common condition that affects men in which they are unable to maintain an erection. This can make penetrative sex difficult or even impossible, leading to loss of confidence and can even cause relationship issues. This condition is also known as impotence.

Erectile dysfunction is usually more common in older men, aged over 40. It’s often nothing to worry about as it can be age and stress related, but if it keeps happening to you then you may need treatment. Physical and psychological causes can have a direct impact on causing erectile dysfunction and sometimes it could also be a sign of something more serious. We would always recommend that the cause of the issue is diagnosed by visiting your GP. They will be able to carry out a full health check to ensure it is not cause by any underlying health problems.

However, there are some healthy lifestyle changes you can make which can sometimes help with the condition. This can include stopping smoking, exercising daily to lose weight, eating a healthy balanced diet, and trying to reduce stress.

The good news is erectile dysfunction can be treated with the right medication which are effective enough to make the problem go away. We have a wide range of well know medications available like Viagra, Sildenafil, Cialis, Tadalafil and Levitra. A high percentage of men have a great chance of these medications working as they work well in increasing blood flow to the penis, enabling an erection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Erectile dysfunction (ED), sometimes referred to as impotence, is when you regularly find it difficult to get or keep an erection firm enough for sex. It is very common and can affect men at any age, but becomes more likely as you get older.

ED can have physical causes (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, low testosterone or side effects of medicines) and psychological causes (such as stress, anxiety, depression or relationship problems). Often it can be a mix of both.

ED itself is not usually dangerous, but it can be a warning sign of underlying health problems, especially conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. If you suddenly develop ED, or your symptoms are ongoing, it’s important to speak to a GP for a check-up.

Treatment depends on the cause. Lifestyle changes (stopping smoking, losing weight, exercising, reducing alcohol) can help, as can managing stress and mental health. Many men are also offered medication such as sildenafil or tadalafil, which improve blood flow to the penis and help you get and keep an erection with sexual stimulation.

Medicines like sildenafil and tadalafil are called PDE5 inhibitors. They relax blood vessels in the penis and increase blood flow when you are sexually aroused. They only work with sexual stimulation, they do not increase sex drive and will not cause constant erections.

ED medicines are safe for most men when prescribed or supplied after a proper medical assessment. They are not suitable for everyone, especially if you take nitrates for chest pain, some blood pressure medicines, or have certain heart conditions. Always complete the medical questionnaire honestly and follow the prescriber’s advice.

Common side effects include headache, flushing, indigestion, blocked nose and dizziness. These are usually mild and short-lived. If you get chest pain, sudden loss of vision, an allergic reaction or an erection lasting more than 4 hours, seek urgent medical help.

Yes. Stopping smoking, cutting down on alcohol, exercising regularly, sleeping well and maintaining a healthy weight can all improve blood flow and help erections. Managing stress, anxiety and relationship issues can also make a big difference alongside or instead of medication.

You should see a GP if ED lasts for more than a few weeks, if you have other symptoms such as chest pain or shortness of breath, or if you have existing heart disease, diabetes or high blood pressure. Seek urgent help if ED is accompanied by severe pain, chest pain, or sudden changes in vision.

It can be safe if you use a registered UK online pharmacy that uses licensed pharmacists, asks detailed medical questions and supplies genuine, MHRA-approved medicines. Avoid websites that offer ED tablets without a prescription or medical checks, as these may sell unsafe products.
